If you’re asking yourself what to look for when buying activewear, we asked Bridget Colhurst, a Pilates instructor and founder of Kala Pilates, to tell us her tips on what to look for when choosing the perfect activewear.

1. The Fit – The fit might be the most crucial part of choosing your new activewear. There is nothing worse than having to stop halfway through an exercise or run to pull your leggings up or adjust your sports bra. When trying on, do a range of movements – for example, squats, twist, jump, raise your arms out to the sides and overhead, and ensure it will feel comfortable and secure as you workout. Note, activewear doesn’t have to be tight and snug to your body. Sometimes loose-fitting outfits are what you need – especially ladies; if it is your time of the month, a tight-fitting outfit might be the thing putting you off working out.

2. Squat and sweat proof – Imagine buying a new set of activewear, taking off the tags, and heading to the gym or your local Pilates class to realise that every time you squat, there is a lot more on show than you hoped for. Make sure whatever fabric you choose feels comfortable on your skin and isn’t see-through in areas you don’t want exposed. The same goes with sweatproof; you wear activewear to work out and get sweaty! So it is also best to opt for fabrics made with breathable, sweat-wicking fabric.

3. How you feel – Choose an outfit that makes you feel good and confident, you want to get dressed and be motivated to workout. Who knows, your next active outfit might just be that extra motivation push you were after. While the fit and style are quite subjective, it’s important to consider how you will feel wearing a particular pair of leggings and if they will help you feel more confident and ready to sweat.

If you can buy an outfit that looks good, feels good, and supports you and the environment, I don’t see why you would look any further. The fitness industry is growing every year so it’s the fitness fashion industry. So now is the perfect time to support small eco-friendly businesses that are giving back to the world whilst helping us look stylish and workout ready.

I have always opted in for eco-friendly activewear, and I will continue to throughout my career as a Pilates Instructor.

We’ve collected some of our favorite sustainable running shoes out there to help you find your ideal shoe.

We’re not going to show you any shoes that look like running shoes, but don’t actually provide real support or are designed only with looks in mind. These are all great shoes, made for running in.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the recommendations.

1. Allbirds Tree Dasher 2

Highlights: Super comfy, breathable, and lightweight everyday running shoe made from eucalyptus and merino wool. They have the world’s first carbon-negative green EVA.

First, we have the Allbirds Tree Dasher 2. I’ve used these for runs in the length of 5-10k and been impressed!

Allbirds is well-known for their minimalist, high-performance shoes, and the Tree Dasher 2 is the brand’s new evolution of running shoe.

Evolved from the classic and much loved Tree Dasher, the Dasher 2 features a softer and grippier sole (pictured left), with added reflective detailing on the eyelets and laces for safer runs.

In addition to the upgrades on the Tree Dasher 2, the new version of the sustainable running shoe features an improved heel collar that helps lock the ankle in place. I definitely noticed some improved stability thanks to this update.

The uppers are made from eucalyptus tree and merino wool and I’ve found this to be breathable and my feet never got too hot even on warm days. The sole is made of the world’s first carbon-negative green EVA, which includes natural materials such as sugar cane. There’s also good natural rubber traction pads as well, and I’ve never encountered slipping even on running after it’s recently been raining.

The Tree Dasher only emits 9 kg CO2e during the production process, which Allbirds then offset, turning them into a carbon neutral shoe. They’re a great option on your search for a sustainable running shoe.

I’ve found these to be great for running, but I’ve also ended up using them regularly for workouts and as an everyday sneaker. Click here to view them on the Allbirds site.

If you love the look of Allbirds running shoes, but want a running shoe which is more suited to running longer distances, check out the Allbirds Tree Flyer, a shoe with a tighter knit and an external counter heel which cushions your joints and provides a secure fit.

Highlights: High-performance running shoes made with high-tech eco-friendly processes

On Running use technology to continuously improve the materials and manufacturing process for their environmentally friendly running shoes.

They’re designed for performance, and have a variety of models to fit different running shoes and shoe preferences.

On’s shoes are lightweight, grippy, and personally, I love the unique looking soles.

These are definitely a great choice and a company to consider in your search for a pair of sustainable running shoes.

They’re also completely vegan running shoes (we reached out to them to confirm this), using no animal glues or materials.

On Running have released a new generation of the popular Cloudflow running shoe styles. The sleek re-engineered uppers give a streamlined look for seamless comfort, and now use 70% recycled polyester.

3. Vivobarefoot

Highlights: Minimal water usage, materials include cork, recycled rubber, natural yarns, and completely vegan.

Vivobarefoot is another sustainable running shoe brand that we definitely recommend.

As you can see on their sustainability page, every part of their brand has sustainability in mind.

In terms of materials, they ensure that everything is sourced in a responsible way. For example, when using leathers they source from wild roaming cattle and sustainably tanned hides. This minimizes water and chemical use in a typically energy-intensive process.

They also use sustainable materials including cork, recycled PET and rubber, and natural yarns.

Their end goal is to make running shoes that create zero waste and have no negative effects on the environment and communities involved in the production process.

4. Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles

Highlights: Water-repellent shoes for wet weather running, made with sustainable materials. Carbon neutral.

The Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles are designed for runners who regularly run in wet and rainy conditions. They’re completely carbon neutral and made with sustainable materials.

The uppers are made with proprietary ZQ merino wool, which as a flourine-free waterproof coating so they never absorb water — perfect if you live in a rainy climate.

The Wool Dasher Mizzles have a grippy sole to ensure you never slip, made with FSC® Certified natural rubber treads, and a comfortable SweetFoam sole.

As rainy weather usually coincides with low visibility, they also have reflective highlights around the show to keep you safe.

If you want even more protection against the elements, Allbirds also make a version with a mid-height sock around the top.

5. Brooks Running

Highlights: High-performance shoes from one of the world’s leading running brands. They have sustainable initiatives focused on product sustainability, climate action, and responsible sourcing.

Brooks is one of the world’s leading running brands, and for good reason. They produce a range of high-quality running shoes for a variety of running styles. If you visit a local running store, they’ll almost certainly stock several pairs of Brooks shoes.

I’ve personally used a pair of Brooks in the past and only had a good experience with the shoes. As a non-competitive runner, they lasted for around a year of regular runs before noticing any parts of the shoe start to have problems.

Over the last several years, Brooks have been incorporating more and more sustainable practices into their business. For example, wherever they use polyester, it includes at least 20% recycled content. They midsoles in Brooks contain organic, non-toxic compounds that means the EVA biodegrades 50x faster than in traditional running shoes. They also use 44% bluesign approved materials.

The company also has invested in eco-friendly headquarters in Seattle, which has LEED Platinum and ENERGY STAR certifications, using 75% less energy than traditional buildings.

They also have a wide range of other sustainability initiatives. Overall, it’s great to see such a well-known running brand investing in sustainability.

If you’re a winter runner needing shoes that will carry you over variable terrain, including snow and ice, then you need a pair of Icebugs.

You can choose from a variety of outdoor running shoes with studs (or unstudded).

Icebug are a sustainable pioneer. They’re the first climate positive footwear brand, offsetting 200% of the carbon emissions their production processes cuase.

They also donate 1% of their annual profit to charitable cuases.

Icebug uses a variety of eco-friendly materials in its sustainable trail running shoes, including bluesign® 100% recycled PET polyester, algae foam as an alternative to fossil-based EVAs, and they’re currently working towards using non-toxic water repellent.

7. Merrell Moab Flight

Highlights: Trail running shoes made from eco-friendly and recycled materials. Excellent support for tough trails.

This trail running shoe from Merrell, the Moab Flight, is packed with eco-friendly features.

It has a 70% recycled mesh upper, 100% recycled laces, and a 50% recycled EVA foam insole. Plus, they’re cruelty-free with no animal products being used.

They’re designed for trail running, with a Vibram EcoStep sole, made from 30% recycled materials, Grip™ rubber outsole, and a rock plate for protection on hard trails.

Despite the strong support, they’re still relatively light, coming in at 1lbs-1oz (460g), and they offer strong arch support.

To sum it up: these eco-friendly Merrells are an awesome running shoe for trail and cross-country runners. They’re available in men’s and women’s variations.

8. Adidas x Parley

Highlights: Shoe made from recycled materials and ocean plastics, low energy and low water waste in the production process

We’ve mentioned this collaboration before, but it’s worth talking about again.

Adidas has teamed up with Parley to help clean the oceans.

All of the shoes in the Adidas x Parley range are made from recycled ocean plastic trash. Don’t worry, they look great too. In fact, you wouldn’t be able to distinguish the materials from other shoes, and we’re confident you’ll be impressed at just how good they are!

These sustainable and recycled running shoes are also created using a low energy and low water usage process.

Like other Adidas running shoes, these sustainable trainers are designed for performance, and you can expect to feel great on your next run with these on your feet.

9. Newton Running

Highlights: Reliable running shoes and the company helps communities thrive with its giving back program

Newton Running is our next sustainable running shoe brand recommendation. They’re investing heavily into giving back to communities, as well as creating amazing shoes.

They make ethical running shoes for everyone. Whether you’re just starting out on a Couch to 5k plan, or running your third marathon, Newton Running will have a shoe for you.

They’re big on giving back to communities and charities and use their platform for social good.

10. Giesswein Wool Cross X

Highlights: Sustainable production methods and facilities, use only certified museling-free wool

Giesswein is a third-generation shoe brand from Austria. They make their running shoes, the Wool Cross X, from museling-free merino wool that are supportive and comfortable.

All wool is handpicked for it’s ethical standards, and Giesswein also have a variety of sustainable production initiatives. For example, they waste 0% of their scraps, use 100% renewables to power production, and 90% of water used is recycled.

The Wool Cross X fits true-to-size and comes in a range of colorways for women and women.

While we haven’t tried these on, we have tested the Wool Runners from Giesswein and found them to be high-quality and comfortable.

11. Hylo Athletics

Highlights: Negative carbon footprint, created using sustainable materials and as part of an ethical supply chain, now completely vegan.

Hylo’s shoes are designed in a circular model – they can be completely reused when you’ve worn them out. The fabrics can be composted, and Hylo will grind up the soles to be used in new pairs of their shoes. This makes them one of the most sustainable running shoe options on the market.

The shoes contain seven different sustainable, natural materials, including: organic cotton, corn fibre, castor bean oil, algae bloom, corn starch, natural rubber, and water-based vegan glue. The brand also offers a carbon breakdown on their website so you can see exactly where the brand is creating emissions and track their progress.

Hylo has released its new running shoe Hylo RUN, which is more durable and performs better than its Light model. The Hylo RUN model is designed for short to mid-distance runners, and while we wouldn’t recommend it if you’re running marathons, the shoe is perfect if you’re just getting started and want an affordable option.

Oh, and they’re completely vegan too.

12. Lunge Neo Run

Highlights: Sustainable footwear, handmade in Germany

The Lunge Neo Runs are a sustainable running shoe, completely handmade in Germany. They use all vegan and non-toxic materials, so they’re a great option.

The Neo Runs are neutral shoes and have a good balance between comfort and support.

They’re lightweight but offer impressively bouncy souls that preserve energy upon impact and give you an extra boost on the track (something we could all do with!).

14. Veja Condor

Highlights: Vegan eco friendly running shoe made from recycled plastic bottles and organic materials

Veja are a well known sustainable sneaker brand.

The Condor is their first foray into running shoes – and you’re going to want to check it out.

The design is modern and stylish, and it comes in a wide variety of colorways for both men and women.

You’d hardly believe the materials in it, either.

The upper is made of 100% recycled plastic bottles, and the mid-sole even contains rice waste. There’s also organic cotton, recycled polyester, sugar cane, and sustainable Amazonian rubber.

HOKA Cliftons are well-known for their comfort thanks to their unique Meta-Rocker system, which has a midsole that essentially rolls from the back to the front, to ensure that every step on your run feels good.

Sadly, 250 million children between 5 and 14 are forced to work in sweatshops in developing countries.

 Children as young as 6 have been found working in sweatshops for up to 16 hours per day. So it’s important to choose clothing –ethical leggings, included– that are made without violating labor and wage laws.

Recycled polyester: Polyester can be recycled from discarded plastic bottles to create a sustainable fabric that is both durable and moisture-wicking. In 2023, recycled plastic leggings are available on the virtual shelves of most sustainable activewear brands! The material is durable, lightweight, crease-resistant, colorfast, quick-drying, stain resistant. But the manufacturing process of recycled polyester reduces CO2 emissions by 32 percent in comparison to regular polyester. 

Bamboo: Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource that can be used to create a soft and comfortable fabric for leggings. It’s ideal for hot weather due to its anti-bacterial, thermoregulating, and odor-repelling properties. Bamboo also offers UV protection against harmful sun rays and is perfect for everyone with sensitive skin.

Hemp: Hemp is a strong and durable fiber that can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. It is also a fast-growing crop, making it a sustainable choice for eco-friendly leggings with UV light, mold, and mildew resistance. Hemp has 4x of the durability of other natural fibers, plus, it gets better with age! The more hemp is used, the softer it gets.  

Tencel: Tencel is a fiber made from sustainably harvested eucalyptus trees. It is biodegradable and has a silky, smooth texture which makes it ideal for sustainable leggings. Are Allbirds really that comfortable?

The short answer, yes! 

But don’t just take our word for it. Pretty much everyone who buys a pair raves about how lightweight the Wool Runners are and how comfortable and breathable the shoes are.

Whether you’re out all day running errands or just need a quick grocery store run, Allbirds are that reliable pair that you’ll end up reaching for each time.

There’s enough cushion and bounce to keep it comfortable and a decent amount of foot support that’s uncommon in these kinds of shoes. People have ended up wearing them on long trips traveling and short trips, and there doesn’t seem to be a long breaking in process. You’ll get used to these shoes pretty quickly, and you’ll have a hard time taking them off. 

The one big question that we see pop up a lot is whether socks are needed with Allbirds shoes. 

The answer is that it’s a preference. The wool used is moisture-wicking and anti-bacterial, so going sockless won’t be a smelly challenge.

Some people feel weird wearing shoes without socks and others embrace it, so it’s totally up to you.

Based on what we’ve seen, though, they won’t smell particularly bad if you decide to go sockless, and even if they do, the shoes are machine-washable. However, if you just can’t wear shoes without socks, Allbirds offers silk socks to go with their shoes for $15.

Can Allbirds Get Wet?

Allbirds have been put to the test, and it is pretty much an all-weather shoe. However, there are some caveats.

The shoes are not water-resistant, so they can get wet reasonably quickly, but they also dry quickly on the upside. 

If you expect to be getting your Allbirds wet, consider choosing a pair of Wool Dasher Mizzles.

How Sustainable is Allbirds?

Allbirds dedicates itself to being as sustainable as possible.

The company is a B Corporation, so they are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, customers, community, supplies, and the environment. 

This is often a difficult process for shoes compared to clothing as there are multiple types of material used through shoes. 

However, Allbirds are setting a pretty high standard.

They only source natural fibers that follow ethical standards, including their merino wool and TENCEL Lyocell. Merino wool used for the shoes is certified by groups monitoring animal welfare and environmental sustainability. 

Recycled water bottles are used for the polyester in laces. They’ve also released Sweetfoam, a new sole material derived from ethically grown Bazilian sugarcane. 

Allbirds has offered to share the technology with other shoemakers to help limit synthetic rubber used in shoes. For the insole, castor bean oil is used. 

Even their packaging and delivery are designed from 90% recycled materials and they use their own shoeboxes for transport rather than boxes within boxes.

How Do Allbirds Fit?

Allbirds run true to size. 

They have a decent amount of arch support, but nothing incredible, so if you need shoes with arch-support they may not be perfect. You can still insert your own custom insoles inside them, though. 

The shoes are lightweight and cushiony, and won’t feel bulky. These are designed to be comfortable and ideal for moderate to heavy usage. Even if you wear them walking around a city all-day, you’ll stay comfortable. 

Can I Use Allbirds for Exercise?

Allbirds Wool Runners are not gym shoes. 

But, they have a separate line for exercise, the Tree Dashers.

If you’re looking for good gym shoes, the Wool Runners aren’t a good choice. They’re ideal every day shoes, but they don’t have the necessary support or design to be suited for intense training or exercise.

If you want to do exercise, go with the Tree Dashers. They’re more supportive and designed to be worn while doing sports.

Allbirds has launched their new highly anticipated natural run collection and they sent us the natural leggings to review.

We have tried different Allbirds products and found them all to be high quality, so we were eager to try out these new leggings.

All views here are our own, and Allbirds didn’t ask us to say anything specific (or positive) about the leggings.

Let’s jump in.

The Verdict:

I was so excited when I first opened the new Allbirds Natural Leggings. The material of the leggings is soft, stretchy, and lightweight. I went for the Shadow color, a lovely blue/grey shade, and a fab change to my usual black workout leggings.

I tested these at a 2 hour HIIT and dance class to put them through their paces. Here’s what I found.

• I felt super secure. The waistband stayed up and didn’t budge. The leggings have an elastic string in the waistband, which can be pulled and made tighter. I didn’t have to keep pulling the leggings up throughout the class continuously.
• Squat Proof: I was confident that everyone behind me couldn’t see straight through to my underwear. 
• Ease of movement: These leggings weren’t restrictive and didn’t dig into my thighs or restrict my range of motion.
• During exercise, no sweat patches formed around the bum area, which was a key benefit for me as I usually stick with black leggings just in case. The only place I did start to see sweat patches were under the knees, but this was at an extremely sweaty and hot class, so overall, they held up well.
• Kept me cool: The natural moisture-wicking and odor-free material allowed me to feel confident and cool when wearing them.
• The leggings washed easily on a cold wash and still feel super soft after washing.

I also found that the Shadow colorway, complimented my Allbirds Tree Dashers perfectly!

How Ethical is Allbirds?

Allbirds is a certified B Corporation, which means they meet high standards of ethical and environmental production. As a B corp, Allbirds strive for lower levels of poverty and inequality and instead empower people and communities in their supply chain.

What fabric are the Active Leggings made from?

Allbirds create the natural legging with their signature eco-friendly fabric, Trino. Trino is crafted from a blend of Eucalyptus tree, merino wool, and recycled materials to create a lightweight, thermoregulating, and moisture wicking fabric perfect for workouts.

The fabric is a refreshing change from plastic and petroleum-based synthetics (which most activewear from well-known sportswear brands is made of today).

The stretchy material allowed unrestricted movement during my dance class, and the material felt supportive and didn’t keep slipping down.

How eco-friendly are the leggings?

The leggings use an eco-friendly blend of natural and recycled materials, as mentioned above.

Allbirds measure the carbon footprint of every item they make. For example, these leggings cost 14.5 kgCO2 emissions to make, which Allbirds then offset through sustainable practices.

The Natural Leggings are a more eco-friendly choice than many other workout clothes on the market.

How do you clean the natural leggings?

Wash at 30 degrees with detergent, and air dry (check the care tag on your leggings before washing just in case!). My leggings are still super soft and held their shape after a wash.

How were the natural leggings packaged?

As with every Allbirds item, products are carefully shipped in recyclable FSC paper, no plastic in sight!

The natural leggings are perfect if you’re looking for high performance, sustainable activewear that positively impacts the planet.

Overall, I am impressed with the leggings. At $98 they are slightly more expensive than other sustainably made leggings on the market, but they are high quality and performed well during my workout.

The Verdict – Tree Dasher Original Review

The Allbirds Tree Dashers are a reliable running shoe for anyone who regularly runs distances in the 5 – 10K range. The shoes are lightweight and breathable, with solid but comfortable soles and good grip. To top it off, the Tree Dashers are made with a range of innovative sustainable materials, which we love to see.

Allbirds’ Background

Allbirds make a variety of minimalist shoes using ethically sourced wool, and a variety of sustainable materials. The company is a Certified B Corp, meaning they’re required to be transparent about their processes, ethics, supply chain, worker treatment, and much more.

Allbirds also partner with Soles4Souls, a charitable organization that works with Allbirds to donate lightly used shoes to people who need them most around the world.

The Tree Dasher is Allbirds’ first foray into the world of running.

We were sent a pair by Allbirds to try out, and provide an honest review. We weren’t asked to say anything specific (or even anything positive!). Overall, we’re enjoying the Tree Dashers (and still are several months after receiving them).

With that said, let’s jump straight into the review!

Tree Dashers: unboxing and first impressions

The ordering system was simple. You can select from a variety of colorways, depending on your preference. I went for the Thunder (Dark Blue Upper / White Sole) option.

When asked about shipping preferences, I chose the free shipping option (named: “Fast-ish Shipping“) on checkout. The shoes arrived at our doorstep before lunch the very next day.

The packaging was smart, and I was glad to see that there wasn’t any unnecessary or excess paper/plastic inside. Important information about the shoes was printed on the box.

Everyone has different style preferences, but for running shoes, these look great.

They’re sleek and minimal, and extremely lightweight and the one-piece upper made from eucalyptus feels strong but soft. They look and feel similar to a knit upper you’d find on most modern running shoes, and no corners cut in terms of durability.

The only piece of extra packaging included is a small piece of recycled cardboard to help the shoes hold their shape during postage. You could also keep them handy to ensure your running shoes hold their shape.

Tree Dasher sizing, fit and feel

When you put the Tree Dashers on for the first time, you start to understand why the reviews for these shoes are so good.

They fit true-to-size and offer half-size options if you’re in-between sizes.

They’re comfortable from the moment you first put them, and dont need any breaking in. The sole feels bouncy, but stable and supportive.

One thing worth noting is that the heel cup felt like it sat relatively low on the foot, which meant that these had to be tied relatively tightly compared to my usual running shoes (Brooks Adrenalines). That said, after a few miles, that was unnoticeable.

The midsole is made from Allbirds’ proprietary SweetFoam™, which is compromised of sugarcane. It’s also the world’s very first carbon negative green EVA — part of what gives these runners their sustainability credentials.

The Tree Dashers are comfortable with or without socks, so that comes down to personal preference. I wear them with socks.

How sustainable are the Allbirds Tree Dashers?

If you’re looking at the Tree Dashers, there’s a high chance it’s because they’re some of the most sustainable running shoes around.

Overall: The Tree Dashers are completely carbon negative as Allbirds offset the 9.0 kg CO2e emitted during the production process.

The insole: Made of castor bean, it’s a sustainable alternative to typical petroleum-based foam insoles found in most popular running shoes.

The midsole: The midsole is made of sugar cane, transformed into a bouncy, supportive, and carbon negative EVA.

Uppers: The lightweight, breathable one-piece uppers are made of FSC-Certified eucalyptus trees. The lace eyelets are made of bio-nylon.

Overall, these are a great option if you’re in the market for a sustainable everyday running shoe. They do include a ZQ Merino padding on the heel cup, so theyre not a vegan shoe.

What makes the Tree Dasher good for running?

The Tree Dashers have a bouncy and supportive sole. As you can see, the heel and sole is relatively wide, which means you have a nice stable base.

The knit upper is breathable and comfortable.

After testing them for a few weeks, it’s clear that they’re a solid running shoe. They’re a comfortable and sturdy everyday running shoe.

The sole also has natural rubber traction pads on the base so it doesn’t feel like you’re going to slip, even if it’s been raining a little. That said, these aren’t wet-weather running shoes, and if that’s what you’re after, Allbirds has a weather-resistant alterative to the Tree Dashers in the Wool Dasher Mizzles.

Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee: First Impressions

On first impressions the Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee is soft and light.

It’s exactly what you would expect: a simple, flowy tee. I chose the Natural Black color option, because it fits my style. But, if black isn’t your color, it also comes in a variety of colors, including Natural Grey, Natural White, Forest, Orchid, and Sungold.

The material feels like they say it does on the product page: soft and breezy. I’m writing this review after it’s had 10+ wears and several washes. It’s holding up well and hasn’t lost any of the original softness.

If you like minimalist clothes that can be dressed up or down, it’s a perfect option.

Thanks to the light material, it also works well as an exercise top.

During the lockdown this year I’ve been doing regular online dance classes, and have worn the TrinoXO™ Tee for those. Thanks to it being so light and breathable, it’s more comfortable than my regular sportswear from brands like Nike and Adidas.

How the Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee Fits

The Tee has a relaxed, flowy fit.

It’s relatively wide and short, as you can see on their website. If you like a boxy fit, you’ll be happy.

Lengthwise, it lands right at the top of the hips. Despite that, there’s still just enough length if you prefer to do a French tuck.

In terms of sizing, I’d recommend choosing the same size as you usually wear. In the picture here, I’m wearing a size Medium, and I’m around 5 ft 7.

If you size down there’s potential that it won’t be long enough.

Materials Used in the Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee

As you would expect from Allbirds, there are some interesting materials used.

The main body of the Tee is made from a combination of TENCEL™ Lyocell, and superfine merino wool, and 5% Chitosan trim.

What’s Chitosan?

It’s a naturally occurring, odor-reducing fiber responsibly extracted from discarded snow crab shells. That means you can wear it multiple times, even on hot days, without worrying about the tee starting to smell. Allbirds source their Chitosan from discarded shells.

How Sustainable Are Allbirds Tees?

Good news: The TrinoXO™ Tee is carbon neutral.

Allbirds achieve this by using a combination of natural, sustainable materials, and balancing the emissions using carbon credits.

Before Allbirds balance the emissions, the carbon footprint starts at 6.3 kg CO2e.

The source of the emissions is broken down by product stage on the tag.

As you can see on the label pictured above:

• Materials: +5.4 kg CO2e
• Use: +2.4 kg CO2e
• End of life: +0.2 kg COE2

Allbirds are a B Corporation, so that’s another plus – your money is going to a company re-investing in creating a more equitable, sustainable society.

Is the TrinoXO™ Tee Worth The Money?

The TrinoXO™ Tee costs $48.

For a simple tee, that’s on the higher end.

But, it’s versatile, breathable, and made from sustainable materials.

You can wear it casually, but I highly recommend it as a top for exercise and fitness classes.

If you’re comfortable spending a little to support a company with a more ethical approach than most, it’s worth it.

Final verdict: I would be happy to pay full price for this tee, and I’d be interested in trying one in the Natural White color in the future.
