Hello! Can you introduce us to This is Anyo?

Hey! I’m Amy and I am the founder of This Is Anyo.

We create high quality, slow fashion that is made to be re-worn season after season. Our aim is to design contemporary styles that will last the test of time. We want our customers to love our clothing as much as we do, and for it to become a companion of theirs for years to come.

From day one, we are proud to say that all products have been made using sustainable materials.

From Organic Cotton, to Recycled Polyester which would alternatively have ended up in landfill. We’re not only a sustainable brand, but an ethical brand also, selecting our suppliers carefully to ensure they share our values so workers have a fair wage and good working environment throughout the product journey.

This Is Anyo is created for people who care about our planet. Those who are seeking sustainable fashion and accessories at an affordable price.

What motivated you to start a sustainable clothing brand?

After working in fashion buying and merchandising for a number of years, I saw first-hand the negative impact of the fashion industry. There was absolutely no consideration for where or how fabric was made, or the working conditions throughout production. The main concern was negotiating the lowest price and getting the most profit.

I personally made the decision to stop buying fast fashion and looked for more sustainable options. It was such a struggle to find flattering, stylish clothing that had been made sustainably and didn’t cost hundreds of pounds.

I knew that there were others out there with the same struggles and so I decided to take a risk, quitting my full-time job in the middle of a pandemic, and building a brand that has strong, sustainable values and creates premium fashion at an affordable price.

What were the main challenges you faced, when first starting This is Anyo?

I began several months before the business launched by extensively researching and studying sustainability and ethical practices to gain a clear understanding of how my brand could make a difference. Listening to podcasts and webinars I was keen to hear what market leaders had to say on the topic. Discovering what new processes and learnings are taking place across the world to try to restore the damage that we, as humans, have caused to the Earth.

These studies are ongoing as the fashion industry is continually evolving based on consumer demand. As more people are seeking to buy sustainable products, brands have started to listen, which is great!

The initial challenge was sourcing suppliers who match our values, and making sure that they are certified by the relevant regulatory bodies. We only want to work with the best. This was a lengthy process and I spoke to in excess of 50 different suppliers based around the world.

How do you ensure This is Anyo stays true to your mission as you grow?

Our values are at the core of everything we do. Continual research to keep up to date on developments into sustainability, seeking new suppliers who specialise in different product areas, and creating designs that will be exciting, yet relevant for years to come. These are our main goals.

We want to become a pioneer for sustainable fashion and build a community whereby we can share this knowledge with our customers, as well as learning from them!

What do you think are the main challenges around sustainability today and how do you approach these?

The main challenge is a mindset of fast fashion prices being the norm. For example, buying a synthetic dress for £10-15 to only wear a handful of times (if that!).

When I was in my early/mid-twenties my friends and I would brag about how cheap our outfits were and for a night out would always look to buy something new, getting anxious about wearing the same thing twice. Back then we didn’t have any idea of the impact our shopping habits were having on the environment.

For a company to sell a dress for such a low price and make a profit, the workers have not been paid fairly. The quality is likely to be extremely poor and so this dress will only have a short life and soon end up in landfill; this should definitely not be the norm.

At This Is Anyo, we have worked hard on our pricing structure to ensure it is fair. Fair to the customer, to our suppliers, and to us.

We offer styling ideas via our Social channels to give inspiration on how to get the most out of your clothing. This is something that we want to do more of as we grow and to share our customer photos of how you wear your This Is Anyo. As our styles are so versatile, many of them can be styled as casual daywear, or they can also be dressed up for an evening out!

We want to emphasise that buying quality fashion which can be worn over and over again will be far more cost effective than buying cheap fashion items that are worn once. Not to mention achieving a lower environmental impact!

Do you have any advice for people looking to be more sustainable in their consumption habits and lifestyle?

Yes! My main piece of advice is to not put pressure on yourself to be 100% sustainable. It is far more beneficial to start making small conscious changes to your habits that can be maintained in the long-term than to go all guns blazing into being Zero Waste and then fizzle out after a few weeks because it doesn’t suit your lifestyle.

We have all been there with faddy diets for example; we have good intentions to start with but slowly end up sinking back into old habits. Whereas if we make small, healthy changes this can be maintained and becomes a part of your normal lifestyle!

Educate yourself on ways that you can make differences that suit you. Start using re-usable cups for your coffee or reusable bottles for water. Take canvas tote bags to the supermarket. Look to buy from sustainable or second-hand brands, but on the odd occasion you might see a fast fashion item you really want, and that is ok!

Have you tried a product from another sustainable brand that you think our audience should know about?

One of my absolute favourite sustainable brands is Rather Lather. A local Yorkshire brand who create handmade beauty products from natural ingredients. Their range include a variety of soaps for the face and body, as well as shampoo bars; all paraben free, plastic free and cruelty free. There is even ‘Sham-poochie’ a shampoo for your dog!

What does the future look like for This is Anyo?

Knowledge of sustainability is growing and there is a better understanding of the impact of fast fashion on our planet. Customers are seeking alternatives which is amazing to see, and brands are starting to react. In the next few years we expect the majority of brands to have started manufacturing in a more sustainable and ethical way.

We don’t want This Is Anyo to just be known as a sustainable brand. We want to be known for our style and quality, although we will always seek out the most ethical ways to create our clothing.

As we grow, we will continue to design and manufacture key fashion items, based on what our customers are looking for. We are excited to expand our product categories and our collections will be guided by our community!

Organic Basics use a range of sustainable fabrics to produce their clothing, this includes Tencel, GOTS Organic cotton, Recycled cashmere and many more.

They only work with trusted, certified suppliers who share the same sustainable vision at they do. This means factories free of forced and child labour, and suppliers which are reducing their environmental impact.

They produce some great solid basics for your wardrobe, and are a perfect alternative to H&M for everyday wear.

One of our favorite product lines from Organic Basics is their circular denim collection, which uses no synthetic dyes, and your jeans can be recycled at the end of their life and stay in circulation.

Made in the USA clothing brand Vetta create pieces which can form part of a capsule wardrobe. tTis means that they can be dressed up or down, and can be interchanged meaning you can buy less, but still have a versatile wardrobe fit for any occasion.

Founded in 1991 by ethical fashion pioneer Safia Minney, People Tree has pushed the boundaries in sustainable clothing for 3 decades. They were the first company to be awarded world fair trade organization product label. Their sustainable manufacturing practices have secured them multiple awards, and they continue to strive for a fairer, more ethical fashion industry.

Their brand uses traditional hand made skills such as hand knitting and weaving in combination with sustainable materials such as TENCEL and organic cottons. They produce a range of easy wearing collections perfect for everyday wear.

The Verdict – Tree Dasher Original Review

The Allbirds Tree Dashers are a reliable running shoe for anyone who regularly runs distances in the 5 – 10K range. The shoes are lightweight and breathable, with solid but comfortable soles and good grip. To top it off, the Tree Dashers are made with a range of innovative sustainable materials, which we love to see.

Allbirds’ Background

Allbirds make a variety of minimalist shoes using ethically sourced wool, and a variety of sustainable materials. The company is a Certified B Corp, meaning they’re required to be transparent about their processes, ethics, supply chain, worker treatment, and much more.

Allbirds also partner with Soles4Souls, a charitable organization that works with Allbirds to donate lightly used shoes to people who need them most around the world.

The Tree Dasher is Allbirds’ first foray into the world of running.

We were sent a pair by Allbirds to try out, and provide an honest review. We weren’t asked to say anything specific (or even anything positive!). Overall, we’re enjoying the Tree Dashers (and still are several months after receiving them).

To summarize:

• The Tree Dashers are a great pair of reliable everyday running shoes
• They’re comfortable, breathable, and sustainable
• The Tree Dashers also double up as a great walking shoe

With that said, let’s jump straight into the review!

Tree Dashers: unboxing and first impressions

The ordering system was simple. You can select from a variety of colorways, depending on your preference. I went for the Thunder (Dark Blue Upper / White Sole) option.

When asked about shipping preferences, I chose the free shipping option (named: “Fast-ish Shipping“) on checkout. The shoes arrived at our doorstep before lunch the very next day.

The packaging was smart, and I was glad to see that there wasn’t any unnecessary or excess paper/plastic inside. Important information about the shoes was printed on the box.

Everyone has different style preferences, but for running shoes, these look great.

They’re sleek and minimal, and extremely lightweight and the one-piece upper made from eucalyptus feels strong but soft. They look and feel similar to a knit upper you’d find on most modern running shoes, and no corners cut in terms of durability.

The only piece of extra packaging included is a small piece of recycled cardboard to help the shoes hold their shape during postage. You could also keep them handy to ensure your running shoes hold their shape.

Tree Dasher sizing, fit and feel

When you put the Tree Dashers on for the first time, you start to understand why the reviews for these shoes are so good.

They fit true-to-size and offer half-size options if you’re in-between sizes.

They’re comfortable from the moment you first put them, and dont need any breaking in. The sole feels bouncy, but stable and supportive.

One thing worth noting is that the heel cup felt like it sat relatively low on the foot, which meant that these had to be tied relatively tightly compared to my usual running shoes (Brooks Adrenalines). That said, after a few miles, that was unnoticeable.

The midsole is made from Allbirds’ proprietary SweetFoam™, which is compromised of sugarcane. It’s also the world’s very first carbon negative green EVA — part of what gives these runners their sustainability credentials.

The Tree Dashers are comfortable with or without socks, so that comes down to personal preference. I wear them with socks.

How sustainable are the Allbirds Tree Dashers?

If you’re looking at the Tree Dashers, there’s a high chance it’s because they’re some of the most sustainable running shoes around.

Overall: The Tree Dashers are completely carbon negative as Allbirds offset the 9.0 kg CO2e emitted during the production process.

The insole: Made of castor bean, it’s a sustainable alternative to typical petroleum-based foam insoles found in most popular running shoes.

The midsole: The midsole is made of sugar cane, transformed into a bouncy, supportive, and carbon negative EVA.

Uppers: The lightweight, breathable one-piece uppers are made of FSC-Certified eucalyptus trees. The lace eyelets are made of bio-nylon.

Overall, these are a great option if you’re in the market for a sustainable everyday running shoe. They do include a ZQ Merino padding on the heel cup, so theyre not a vegan shoe.

What makes the Tree Dasher good for running?

The Tree Dashers have a bouncy and supportive sole. As you can see, the heel and sole is relatively wide, which means you have a nice stable base.

The knit upper is breathable and comfortable.

After testing them for a few weeks, it’s clear that they’re a solid running shoe. They’re a comfortable and sturdy everyday running shoe.

The sole also has natural rubber traction pads on the base so it doesn’t feel like you’re going to slip, even if it’s been raining a little. That said, these aren’t wet-weather running shoes, and if that’s what you’re after, Allbirds has a weather-resistant alterative to the Tree Dashers in the Wool Dasher Mizzles.

Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee: First Impressions

On first impressions the Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee is soft and light.

It’s exactly what you would expect: a simple, flowy tee. I chose the Natural Black color option, because it fits my style. But, if black isn’t your color, it also comes in a variety of colors, including Natural Grey, Natural White, Forest, Orchid, and Sungold.

The material feels like they say it does on the product page: soft and breezy. I’m writing this review after it’s had 10+ wears and several washes. It’s holding up well and hasn’t lost any of the original softness.

If you like minimalist clothes that can be dressed up or down, it’s a perfect option.

Thanks to the light material, it also works well as an exercise top.

During the lockdown this year I’ve been doing regular online dance classes, and have worn the TrinoXO™ Tee for those. Thanks to it being so light and breathable, it’s more comfortable than my regular sportswear from brands like Nike and Adidas.

How the Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee Fits

The Tee has a relaxed, flowy fit.

It’s relatively wide and short, as you can see on their website. If you like a boxy fit, you’ll be happy.

Lengthwise, it lands right at the top of the hips. Despite that, there’s still just enough length if you prefer to do a French tuck.

In terms of sizing, I’d recommend choosing the same size as you usually wear. In the picture here, I’m wearing a size Medium, and I’m around 5 ft 7.

If you size down there’s potential that it won’t be long enough.

Materials Used in the Allbirds TrinoXO™ Tee

As you would expect from Allbirds, there are some interesting materials used.

The main body of the Tee is made from a combination of TENCEL™ Lyocell, and superfine merino wool, and 5% Chitosan trim.

What’s Chitosan?

It’s a naturally occurring, odor-reducing fiber responsibly extracted from discarded snow crab shells. That means you can wear it multiple times, even on hot days, without worrying about the tee starting to smell. Allbirds source their Chitosan from discarded shells.

How Sustainable Are Allbirds Tees?

Good news: The TrinoXO™ Tee is carbon neutral.

Allbirds achieve this by using a combination of natural, sustainable materials, and balancing the emissions using carbon credits.

Before Allbirds balance the emissions, the carbon footprint starts at 6.3 kg CO2e.

The source of the emissions is broken down by product stage on the tag.

As you can see on the label pictured above:

• Materials: +5.4 kg CO2e
• Use: +2.4 kg CO2e
• End of life: +0.2 kg COE2

Allbirds are a B Corporation, so that’s another plus – your money is going to a company re-investing in creating a more equitable, sustainable society.

Is the TrinoXO™ Tee Worth The Money?

The TrinoXO™ Tee costs $48.

For a simple tee, that’s on the higher end.

But, it’s versatile, breathable, and made from sustainable materials.

You can wear it casually, but I highly recommend it as a top for exercise and fitness classes.

If you’re comfortable spending a little to support a company with a more ethical approach than most, it’s worth it.

Final verdict: I would be happy to pay full price for this tee, and I’d be interested in trying one in the Natural White color in the future.
